STEP 5: Hands and Eyes (WBT)

Hello again!

This week I am going to present you 1 new tool to use in your Whole Brain Teaching lessons. It is one of the most simple strategies, but it really works !

  • How it works?

Explain your students that you are going to do a game. Every time you say HANDS AND EYES, they have to look at you, cross their fingers, be quiet and pay attention on what you say.

  • Why HANDS and EYES?

This technique should be used when you have to explain your pupils something very important. It is crucial to make them aware of it.

We say hands and eyes because these two parts of the body need to be in a special position in order to pay attention. When you say HANDS your kids will know that they have to cross their fingers and when you say EYES, they will know they have to look at you.

Of course there are more examples of instructions that relate parts of the body and an action. Do you want to know some of them? LET’S GO!

1. BODIES AND CHAIRS

In this case, we are going to use BODIES and CHAIRS when we want our kids stand up or move from one place to another. When you say bodies and chairs, your pupils have to repeat these words 3 times until they sit down or they stand up or they move from one place to another. It is really useful and organized.

2. FIND A MATE

It works exactly the same that BODIES AND CHAIRS. The only difference is that it is used to make pairs in class. Sometimes it is difficult to make them find a partenr. This instruction allows them to find a person near them and work together. When you say FIND A MATE, they will repeat it 3 times and find a partner.

3. PICK A ….

In some activities they would need to pick up their pencils, or rulers,  or colours… So I recommend you to use the same technique for these situations! You can say : PICK A RULER , and they would repeat it 3 times and pick up a ruler. It is a good way to see if they have the material or if they are paying attention.

As you can see, you can even use more instructions in this way ! TRY IT!
